Maybe the money arrives quickly. Maybe it passes through several correspondent banks, gets delayed by a compliance review, and lands with a smaller amount than expected after fees and foreign-exchange markups.

Why does an international payment still feel like a 1990s process when the rest of your work happens instantly online?

What is a neobank?

A neobank is a digital-first financial provider that delivers banking or payment services primarily through an app, website, or API rather than a branch network.

But the word "neobank" does not describe one universal legal structure. That distinction matters.

A digital provider may be:

  • A licensed bank that accepts deposits and operates under a banking charter.
  • An electronic money institution or payment institution that provides payment accounts and transfers but may not be a bank.
  • A fintech using partner banks or Banking-as-a-Service providers for account holding, card issuance, compliance, and access to payment rails.

So, when you compare providers, do not stop at the brand name. Ask: Who holds your funds? Who is licensed? Which entity is responsible for the payment?

Ask these questions:

Do not choose based only on a clean app or a low advertised fee. Choose the infrastructure that matches your risk, volume, countries, and need for control.
